Fighting Poverty
For some, poverty is a state of life while others face unexpected challenges that force them into poverty.
Catholic Charities is Building Hope for the less fortunate of our community.
Currently in Ector County, 16 % of the population is living below the poverty level while 32% of the community over the age of 25 are unable to read at a fifth grade level and an estimated 339 men, women and children are homeless.*
Where do these people go for help?
Odessa Catholic Charities.

The Building Hope Campaign
Catholic Charities provides a continuum of services to those in need. Our goal is to meet the immediate needs, such as food, medicine and utilities, and to prepare clients for a life of self-sufficiency through training in money management, literacy, GED preparedness, English as a Second Language (ESL), and workforce training. All educational programs are provided free-of-charge.
Catholic Charities currently provides services from two locations in Odessa which are approximately 3 miles apart. The Thrift Store is located on Andrews Highway just south of University Boulevard while all other agency services are located on West Tenth Street. Many of the clients served by Catholic Charities do not have personal transportation and must travel by bus or on foot between the locations to receive services.
The Thrift Shop occupies 7,500 of the 25,000 square foot building in which it is located. Building Hope is a community-wide campaign to raise $500,000 for renovating the remaining 17,500 square feet into useable space. Once completed, clients will be able to access multiple services in one location that is safe and ADA compliant.
The renovation will make space available for:
- a large food pantry with refrigeration allowing clients to receive eggs, milk and other perishable items
- three social service offices for private consultation with clients
- the Catholic Charities Cory Learning Center
- a warehouse to store merchandise for clients and the Thrift Store
- three additional offices for use by community partners that provide supportive services to clients
Your generous support will allow us to continue Building Hope in our community.
